WHAT IS BRAZILIAN

JIU-JITSU?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport and self-defense system that emphasizes grappling and ground fighting techniques to subdue opponents utilizing takedowns, pins and submission holds. As Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, hand-to-hand combat on the ground is our sanctuary. By utilizing standing wrestling techniques we aim to neutralize our opponents by bringing them to the ground. Once grounded, we progress through a hierarchy of pins to effectively establish higher degrees of control of an aggressor until the opportunity to safely apply a submission hold presents itself. In competition, this would force our opponent to concede defeat via tapout. As a means of self-defense, Jiu-Jitsu is considered the preeminent martial art form because of daily practice against live resistance in a safe environment.
